There was a great war, and the King had many soldiers, but gave them small pay, so small that they could not live upon it, so three of them agreed among themselves to desert.	Шла ужасная война, и у драчливого короля была огромная армия, поэтому солдатам он платил гроши, настолько мало, что прожить на эти деньги было невозможно. □ Тогда трое солдат сговорились удрать из армии.
One of them said to the others,	Один из солдат предостерёг дружков:
"If we are caught we shall be hanged on the gallows; how shall we manage it?"	"А вот, как поймают нас, то, точно, не миновать нам виселицы. И, как тогда?"
Another said,	Другой успокоил:
"Look at that great cornfield, if we were to hide ourselves there, no one could find us; the troops are not allowed to enter it, and to-morrow they are to march away."	"А вон, гляди, большое поле колосится, если там спрятаться, ни одна собака нас там не сыщет; солдатам не позволят топтать поле, а завтра они будут далеко на марше."
They crept into the corn, only the troops did not march away, but remained lying all round about it.	Забрались беглецы меж колосьев, но только солдаты не пошли в поход, а залегли оцепив поле.
They stayed in the corn for two days and two nights, and were so hungry that they all but died, but if they had come out, their death would have been certain.	Прятались они в поле два дня и две ночи, и оголодали до того, что от голода брюхо подвело, хоть подыхай. А если на попятную пойти, тогда уж точно смерть.
Then said they,	И начали они плакаться:
"What is the use of our deserting if we have to perish miserably here?"	"Ну, что толку, что мы сбежали, если нам теперь придется погибнуть не за понюх табаку."
But now a fiery dragon came flying through the air, and it came down to them, and asked why they had concealed themselves there?	Как раз летал над ними огнедышащий дракон. Подлетел к ним и спросил, от кого они тут прячутся?
They answered,	Они с ужасом отвечали ему:
"We are three soldiers who have deserted because the pay was so bad, and now we shall have to die of hunger if we stay here, or to dangle on the gallows if we go out."	"Мы, дескать, все трое - солдаты и сбежали от короля, потому жалование платили плохое; а теперь мы не знаем, как нам быть, то ли умрём от голода, если здесь останемся, либо будем болтаться на перекладине, если пойдем сдаваться."
"If you will serve me for seven years," said the dragon, "I will convey you through the army so that no one shall seize you."	Тогда дракон им предложил: "Если вы прослужите мне семь лет, то я вас перенесу над солдатами так, что никто до вас не сможет добраться."
- "We have no choice and are compelled to accept," they replied.	"Что ж, выбора у нас нет, мы согласны," -ответили они.
Then the dragon caught hold of them with his claws, and carried them away through the air over the army, and put them down again on the earth far from it; but the dragon was no other than the Devil.	Дракон схватил их своими когтищами и пронёс их над королевским войском. Опустился на землю далеко от того поля. Дракон оказался не кем иным, как самим чёртом.
He gave them a small whip and said,	Подал им чёрт небольшой кнут и молвил:

"Whip with it and crack it, and then as much gold will spring up round about as you can wish for; then you can live like great lords, keep horses, and drive your carriages, but when the seven years have come to an end, you are my property."	"Стоит вам только щелкнуть им, на вас сразу посыплются золотые, сколько вашей душе будет угодно: заживёте как знатные лорды, будете содержать собственный выезд, и разъезжать в каретах; но только когда семь лет минут, вы останетесь навсегда моими рабами".
Then he put before them a book which they were all three forced to sign.	Затем чёрт сунул им под нос книгу, в которой они все вынуждены были расписаться.
"I will, however, then set you a riddle," said he, "and if you can guess that, you shall be free, and released from my power."	''Я, однако, когда срок прийдёт, загадаю вам загадку,'' сказал он, ''если сможете отгадать её, то, пойдёте на все четыре стороны и будете свободны от моей власти''.
Then the dragon flew away from them, and they went away with their whip, had gold in plenty, ordered themselves rich apparel, and travelled about the world.	Затем дракон улетел, а беглецы начали хлестать со всей дури кнутом. Денег стало полным полно, разоделись богачами, и отправились путешествовать по свету.
Wherever they were they lived in pleasure and magnificence, rode on horseback, drove in carriages, ate and drank, but did nothing wicked.	И где только их не носило. Везде они жили в роскоши и богатстве, разъезжали в каретах, пили, ели, но озорства себе не позволяли.
The time slipped quickly away, and when the seven years were coming to an end, two of them were terribly anxious and alarmed; but the third took the affair easily, and said,	Время летело не заметно, и когда семилетний срок подошёл к концу, двое из беглецов распустили нюни, зато третий был в спокоен:
"Brothers, fear nothing, my head is sharp enough, I shall guess the riddle."	"Братцы, ничего не бойтесь! Мозги пока у меня хорошо соображают, я отгадаю загадку!"
They went out into the open country and sat down, and the two pulled sorrowful faces.	Вышли они в чисто поле, расположились поудобней, на тех двоих лица не было.
Then an aged woman came up to them who inquired why they were so sad?	Вдруг откуда не возьмись подошла к ним старушка и спросила, чем они так опечалены.
"Alas!" said they, "how can that concern you?	"Ну, - а вам то что до нас? - спросили они.
After all, you cannot help us."	- Вы все равно нашему горю помочь не сможете".
"Who knows?" said she.	"Как знать? - ответила старуха.
"Tell your trouble to me."	- Расскажите мне, что стряслось то"?
So they told her that they had been the Devil's servants for nearly seven years, and that he had provided them with gold as plentifully as if it had been blackberries, but that they had sold themselves to him, and were forfeited to him, if at the end of the seven years they could not guess a riddle."	Тогда они поведали старушке, что они уже почти семь лет служат черту и что тот осыпал их за это золотом, как из рога изобилия. А за это они ему продались, дав ему расписку, что как выйдет срок и они не отгадают загадки, которую чёрт загадает им, то останутся у него навечно в рабстве.
The old woman said,	Старушка на это ответила:
"If you are to be saved, one of you must go into the forest, there he will come to a fallen rock which looks like a little house, he must enter that, and then he will obtain help."	"Если вы хотите спастись, один из вас должен пойти в лес и найти там обвалившуюся скалу, которая выглядит, как избушка. Когда он войдет в туда, он получит помощь".
The two melancholy ones thought to themselves,	Те двое загрустили и подумали:

"That will still not save us," and stayed where they were, but the third, the merry one, got up and walked on in the forest until he found the rock-house.	"Ни что не спасёт нас," - и остались на месте, а третий, весельчак, тотчас подскочил и отправился в лес. Солдат быстро разыскал каменный домик.
In the little house, however, a very aged woman was sitting, who was the Devil's grandmother, and asked the soldier where he came from, and what he wanted there?	В этом домике сидела пожилая женщина, она приходилась черту родной бабкой. Она стала расспрашивать солдата откуда он, и что он здесь забыл?
He told her everything that had happened, and as he pleased her well, she had pity on him, and said she would help him.	Солдат поведал старухе все, что с ними приключилось. Парень бабке понравился, ей стало жаль его. Она пообещала, что поможет ему.
She lifted up a great stone which lay above a cellar, and said,	Подняла она большой камень, под которым был вход в погреб, и сказала:
"Conceal thyself there, thou canst hear everything that is said here; only sit still, and do not stir.	"Тут прячься; ты сможешь услышать все, о чём пойдёт речь. Только сиди тихо и не гу-гу.
When the dragon comes, I will question him about the riddle, he tells everything to me, so listen carefully to his answer."	Когда прилетит дракон, я его буду расспрашивать о загадке, мне он все откроет, а ты запоминай".
At twelve o'clock at night, the dragon came flying thither, and asked for his dinner.	Ровно в полночь явился дракон и потребовал себе ужин.
The grandmother laid the table, and served up food and drink, so that he was pleased, and they ate and drank together.	Его бабушка накрыла на стол, подала ему и вдоволь еды, и напитков, так что он стал довольным и они начали есть и пить вместе.
In the course of conversation, she asked him what kind of a day he had had, and how many souls he had got?	Чуть позже за разговором, она спросила своего внука, как у него день прошёл и сколько душ успел он заарканить?
"Nothing went very well to-day," he answered, "but I have laid hold of three soldiers, I have them safe."	"Улов не очень богат, - ответил черт, - но у меня есть в запасе трое солдат, они то у меня в надёжных руках."
"Indeed! three soldiers, that's something like, but they may escape you yet."	"Разумеется! Трое солдат! Похоже, ещё они и вовсе от тебя сбегут."
The Devil said mockingly,	Черт на это только рассмеялся:
"They are mine!	"Они мои!
I will set them a riddle, which they will never in this world be able to guess!"	Я им загадаю такую загадку, что они ее во век не отгадают!"
"What riddle is that?" she inquired.	"А что же это за загадка?" - спросила старуха.
"I will tell you.	"Сейчас узнаешь.
In the great North Sea lies a dead dogfish, that shall be your roast meat, and the rib of a whale shall be your silver spoon, and a hollow old horse's hoof shall be your wine-glass."	В великом северном море лежит мертвая акула -это будет им ростбиф; а ребра кита - это им вместо серебряной ложки; а старое лошадиное копытце - будет фужер..."
When the Devil had gone to bed, the old grandmother raised up the stone, and let out the soldier.	Когда черт уснул, его старая бабушка приподняла камень и выпустила солдата из погреба.
"Hast thou paid particular attention to everything?" -	"Все ли ты внимательно слушал?"
"Yes," said he, "I know enough, and will contrive to save myself."	"Да, - кивнул он, - я довольно хорошо всё слышал и сумею себя спасти."

Then he had to go back another way, through the window, secretly and with all speed to his companions.	Затем он выбрался из хижины через окно и скрытно поспешил в обратный путь, и скоро вернуться к своим товарищам.
He told them how the Devil had been overreached by the old grandmother, and how he had learned the answer to the riddle from him.	Он рассказал им, как чёртова бабушка чёрта перехитрила и как он узнал ответы на эти загадки.
Then they were all joyous, and of good cheer, and took the whip and whipped so much gold for themselves that it ran all over the ground.	Тогда они обрадовались, взяли кнут и столько нащёлкали себе золотых монет, что золото вокруг по полу каталось.
When the seven years had fully gone by, the Devil came with the book, showed the signatures, and said,	Когда минули все семь лет сполна, черт явился с книгой, показал им подписи их и сказал:
"I will take you with me to hell.	"Я прихвачу вас с собою в ад.
There you shall have a meal!	Там вас уже ждут на обед!
If you can guess what kind of roast meat you will have to eat, you shall be free and released from your bargain, and may keep the whip as well."	И вот, если вы угадаете, какой ростбиф там вам предложат, то вы станете свободными как по уговору, да кнут можете себе оставить."
Then the first soldier began and said,	Тут первый солдат в ответ ему и сказал:
"In the great North Sea lies a dead dog-fish, that no doubt is the roast meat."	"В великом северном море лежит дохлая акула -это, без сомнения, и будет наш ростбиф?"
The Devil was angry, and began to mutter, "Hm! hm! hm!" And asked the second,	Черт нахмурился, крякнул: И спросил второго солдата:
"But what will your spoon be?"	"Но, что за ложка у вас будет?"
"The rib of a whale, that is to be our silver spoon."	"Ребро кита, вот что будет нам серебряной ложкой!"
The Devil made a wry face, again growled, "Hm! hm! hm!" and said to the third, "And do you also know what your wine-glass is to be?" D"An old horse's hoof is to be our wineglass." DThen the Devil flew away with a loud cry, and had no more power over them, but the three kept the whip, whipped as much money for themselves with it as they wanted, and lived happily to their end.	Черт поморщился опять, трижды хмыкнул и спросил у третьего: "Может быть и ты знаешь, какой у вас фужер будет?" □"Старое лошадиное копыто - вот, что должно нам вместо фужера быть." Тут черт улетел с душераздирающем криком - и над ними всякую власть потерял. □ А кнут так и остался у солдат, и они продолжали кнутом щелкать, когда им была охота. □ Так и жили они богато и счастливо до конца дней своих.
