“Prisoners’ of war problem” is one of the most obscure issues of the Nomonhan (Khalhin-Gol) conflict history. So far, it remains poorly studied and all published data is contradictory and patchy. The subject of this study are various aspects of the story of the Red Army ranks and officers, captured at Nomonhan – from the circumstances of capture through the treatment in Japanese captivity, interaction with Japanese military intelligence and Russian emigres in Manchuria, negotiations on the prisoners’ exchange and exchange procedure, towards treatment of returned former prisoners by Soviet military and political authorities and their subsequent fates.

The present research is based mostly on archival materials – after-action written explanations and statements of the former prisoners of war, the investigation materials prepared by GUGB NKVD, sentences of military tribunals, documents produced by military prosecution and high-ranking military and political officers.

The book includes biographical information about the Red Army soldiers released from Japanese captivity, as well as on those who was murdered by Japanese military after the capture or disappeared after being taken prisoner. Documentary section consists of 99 archival documents, related to the subject.
