In researching this book I was fortunate to be able to consult the libraries of Queen’s University, Belfast, and the University of Aberdeen. The Custodians of St Nicholas’ Church, Carrickfergus, kindly let me see round their beautiful church and explained many of its features to me – the events I have portrayed as taking place there are purely fictional.
