Дословно по протоколу допроса, переведённому с французского на английский язык, сказанное выглядит следующим образом: «I went to the door in the Impasse Ronsin, and opened it by lifting up the lower latch. Then I walked to the pantry door, which I opened by merely turning the knob. I went through the hall, where I noticed nothing unusual, then walked up to the first floor. At the end of the staircase I saw the door of Mme. Steinheil’s room, whom I had never seen, although she is a neighbour of mine. She was on her bed. At the same time Couillard left the window and went near the bed.»

Следует иметь в виду, что при указании стоимости материальных ценностей автор исходил из золотого содержания валют на середину 1908 года, которое составляло для 1 франка 3,22 грамма монетарного золота, 1 фунта стерлингов – 7,32 грамма и 1 доллара – 1,5 грамма. Правда, следует иметь в виду, что состав монетарного золота отличался от ювелирного и в каждой крупной стране являлся своим собственным, но этими флуктуациями цены автор для простоты подсчётов пренебрёг.

Дословно в английской версии мемуаров написано так: The photograph represented a group of three persons: two men and a woman. I seemed to recognise one of the men, a bearded person with sharp shaped features and keen eyes. «There is a striking likeness,» I said, «between this man and the red-bearded individual who on the night of May 30th-31st, stood near the door of the corridor, in the room, and who never spoke.»
