‘We can go,’ I said, hauling myself up the high step and into the Oversnow.

They’d all piled into the contraption by the time I got back. Gavin punched the engine, which spliced the night air with its waking cough.

‘What happened?’ Katherine asked as I sat down next to her.

‘I got there and he just stopped breathing.’

‘He just stopped breathing?’

‘He just stopped.’

‘He’s dead?’ Audrey asked. There was hope in her voice, but whether it was that he was dead or alive, I couldn’t be sure.

‘Yes.’

‘You’re sure?’

‘Yes.’

‘How?’

‘He just stopped breathing. Let’s go home.’
