В этой связи обвинение Китая в столь резком воздействии на рынок нефти и завышении цены может показаться нелогичным: самым крупным потребителем, причем с большим отрывом, пока остается США. Однако для экономистов решающее влияние на повышение цены оказывает не совокупный объем потребления сам по себе, а темпы его прироста. С этой точки зрения быстрый рост китайского объема потребления оказывает дестабилизирующее воздействие на нефтяной рынок, который имел достаточный запас мощностей для удовлетворения традиционных потребностей США и всего остального мира, но не был готов к резкому росту потребления со стороны Китая.
