Neanderthals: What Kind of People They Were and Why They Went Extinct.

The work is devoted to the Neanderthals — our closest relatives, who seem to have been as human as modern people are. The author describes their anatomy, genetics, evolutionary history and various aspects of their culture. He stresses the important role the Neanderthals played in the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition. Special consideration is given to their mental capability, their relations and possible interactions with anatomically modern humans, as well as the causes of their disappearance from the world.

Neanderthalienii: ce fel de oameni au fost si de ce au mers pe cale de extinctie.

Studiul este dedicat neanderthalienilor — rudelor noştri celor mai apropiaţi, care par să fi fost la fel de umani cum sunt oameni contemporani. Autorul descrie anatomia lor, genetica, istoria evolutivă şi diversele aspecte ale culturii lor. El subliniază rolul important al neanderthalienilor în tranziţia de la Paleoliticul mijlociu la cel superior. O atenţie deosebită este acordată capacităţilor lor mentale, relaţiilor lor şi interacţiunilor posibile cu oameni anatomic contem-porani, precum şi cauzelor de extincţie.

Неандертальцы: какими они были, и почему их не стало.

Эта небольшая книжка посвящена неандертальцам — самым близким родственникам гомо сапиенс среди всех существ, когда-либо обитавших на нашей планете. Ни об одном другом виде ископаемых гоминид мы не знаем сегодня столько, сколько о них. Автор рассказывает об их анатомии, генетике, эволюционной истории, о разных сторонах их культуры. Особое внимание уделено вопросу об интеллектуальном потенциале неандертальцев, проблеме их гибридизации с гомо сапиенс, а также причинам их исчезновения.
