Summary

(1) A simple method for testing the scent in dogs is being described.

(2) There is a direct functional relation between the activity in game pursuit and the acutness of scent.

(3) The dog races which were investigated show no statistically proved difference in their activity in pursuit.

(4) The percentage of dogs with the presence and absence of the pursuit ability measured by means of our methods is different among different races of dogs.

(5) There is a definite racial difference in the acutness of smell. The best sense of smell have the Laika-dogs and German sheep-dogs.

(6) The males have evidently a better acutness of smell than females.

(7) The training of olfactory apparatus of the dog upon a definite kind of odour lowers the threshold of its reception.

(8) This method may be applied in selecting dogs for training them for special services which make use of the scent. A presence of correlation between tests according to our method and tests of dog’s ability in training them for a special kind of retrieval service was observed.
