« REQUIEM « OF VERDI AT PARIS’ ST. EUSTACHE By Jan Maguire

Paris, March 5. — Father Emile Martin, the Lamoureux Orchestra and the Saint Eustache Church Choir were at their best Thursday night in Verdi’s “Requiem,” held in the church. They were inspired by four soloists with vastly divergent origins but remarkably homogeneous conceptions of the work.

The four soloists were Luisa Maragliano, soprano, from La Scala Opera, Milan, Luben Mihailov, tenor, and Lilian Stephanovad, mezzo-soprano, from the Sofia Opera in Bulgaria and Leonardo Wolovsky, baritone, from the Berlin Opera. Although all of them possess first-rate solo voices, none of them took advantage of Verdi to exhibit their solo talents. They maintained the strictest respect for the ensemble and for the quality of the work. The result was a wide diversity of vocal qualities blended into a tastefully wellbalanced ensemble.

Luisa Maragliano showed a voluminous voice and a big vibrato at the beginning. Later, she showed how she could coax a pianissimo from nothing gently into the auditive field, with no vibrato whatsoever. The last segment of the work, “Libera Me,” brought out all the numerous degrees and shades in between of which Miss Maragliano was capable. Her use of her voice has the unusual combination of temperament and control.

Subject Mastered

Miss Stephanovad, who replaced Rita Gorr at the last minute, characterized her role by mastery of the subject matter. Her lovely vocal quality was made to serve her interpretative sense, and Verdi’s intention. The duet between the two women was the high point of the work.

Mr. Mihailov’s tenor was intense and capable of considerable variation. In keeping with the way of the other soloists, however, he sang for the sake of the ensemble.

Leonardo Wolovsky’s rich baritone voice provided the dark quality needed in the “Requiem.” His part is the most exacting of the four, and he apparently enjoyed the challenge. His pitch was infallible and spared us the passages where there is invariably a sour transition, in less capable performances. His self-assurance served as a solid base for the quartet.

ANTONIO FRADELETTO

Half a century ago I had the good fortune to have as my professor Antonio Fradeletto, a name that is known only in Italy; even in Italy few of those who live outside Venice remember the man. But in Venice his name is venerated; it is not forgotten that he it was who founded and animated the famous Art Fair, held biennially and now an affair of world-wide importance which adds its own luster, if this be possible, to a unique city.

Fradeletto was professor, deputy, senator and minister of state. Above all he was the greatest orator in the Italy of his time. However it is not to his titles I now pay my respects; but to the admirable qualities that made him the man he was.

Fradeletto was a foundling, abandoned at birth on the steps of the Hospital of Charity and brought up on public assistance; the child soon showed exceptional talent and as a result of the attention he drew by his special abilities as an adolescent his father offered him recognition and aid in following his studies; but the young man felt little honour at the delayed gesture from a father turned penitent and had the spirit to refuse the offers of family name and educational aid. He preferred to keep his foundling name — Venetian for “little brother” — and to set about adorning the name for himself.

It did not take long; hardly was adolescence over before the public lectures which he gave on the most varied subjects established him as a speaker of splendid reputation and great ability. Soon all the honours were to come his way, success coming when he was still very young. His activities spread to all fields of learning. No noble cause found him aloof or detached. And in first place was his love of Venice; like his friend, Richard Selvatico, poet and mayor, he felt an infinite tenderness in the depths of his being towards his beloved Venice.

Among my recollections of this exceptional teacher I still more or less remember the words he used in one of the addresses he gave us at the beginning of term : — “You who still have a patrimony of high ideals and whose youthful hearts can still echo the voice that reaches them from peaks of fine achievement, promise yourself this very moment to keep faith all along life’s path. It may not be easy — human destiny being, alas, beset by a need for compromise. But any of you who does manage to save his soul will later experience a thrill of proud joy at finding that his heart has remained young”.

These words, spoken by the Master in a powerful, vibrant voice, went straight to my heart and were inscribed there for ever. They have helped me many a time and certainly they helped to make life a real joy for me.

I too have now reached old age, but my thoughts still turn to my beloved teacher with deep feelings of gratitude.

Many authors of the past make a strong appeal to some persons while they repel the attentions of others. But there is one author who has the peculiarity of being attractive or repulsive to the same persons at different periods of life, or condition, or even weather. There can be no consistency in the attitude to Walt Whitman; those who approach his work are thrilled by him today and disgusted by him tomorrow. It depends not so much on him as on themselves ; on whether they are young and eager or weary of life; on whether they are passing through certain moods or have ceased to have a particular experience ; on whether the sun is shining and they are out of doors or whether they sit in an armchair before the fire. Whitman is himself so various within definitely recurrent outlines, so uncompromisingly violent, that, as he stands before the reader in his blank nudity, it depends not on him so much as on the reader whether the aspect of him pleases or annoys, and in consequence we have the phenomenon of careful judges inspecting Whitman to-day and giving him the first prize, when tomorrow they will indignantly eject him from the category of competitors. It all depends on the reader himself — on his mood, on his physical state, on his accidental attitude to life. I know of no other writer who depends so much on our nerves and our digestion for the mode in which we welcome or repulse him.

REDISCOVERED TREASURES OF PRAGUE CASTLE NOW ON VIEW

The group of paintings at the London embassy of the United Arab Republic that were identified a few weeks ago as the work of Tiepolo, are a reminder of the ease with which even major works of art may be overlooked when they become “part of the scenery”. In an exhibition now being held at Prague Castle there are nearly 50 examples of the same phenomenon, many of them works by some of the greatest artists.

The exhibition has been arranged to acquaint the Czechoslovakian people with the astonishing results of the threeyear historical study of the Prague Castle Gallery that the Institute for the Theory and History of Art, led by Jaromir Neumann, undertook on the instructions of the Restoration Council of the Castle.

There are 74 works on show, many of them major paintings by such masters as Rubens, Tintoretto, Titian, and Veronese, that have not been correctly attributed for several centuries. Some of these paintings were languishing in the darkness of the storerooms of Hraddany Castle, and months of patient study and restoration were needed before their origins could be traced.

Most of the paintings in the present exhibition, however, come into the same category of neglected masterpieces as the Tiepolos in London. Nearly two-thirds of them have, in fact, been hanging for years in the halls, staircases, offices, and galleries of the rambling building that dominates the city, with no more than a cursory glance during the annual inventory.

To the officials who have lived and worked in Hradcany over the years, many of these paintings must have come to seem part of the furniture. Major works by Veronese, Tintoretto, and Rubens, for example, have been hanging modestly on the castle walls, long erroneously described as “From the Studio of Bassano”. „Anonymous Painter of the 17th Century”, and “By an Unknown Aristist”. And, although it reveals others, it is this “mislaid masterpieces” aspect of the Prague Exhibition that most readily captures the imagination.

The story of the Prague Castle collection is long and eventful. It began with the Thirty Years War, when Swedish troops carried off most of the paintings and objects of art that were held in Hradcany. When the war ended in 1648. Ferdinand III set about restoring the collections and at the sale of the Duke of Buckingham’s pictures at Antwerp the same year no fewer than 100 paintings were bought for Prague.

The Hraddany Collection continued to grow during the remaining years of the century until, by the year 1700, the King of Bohemia could boast a vast collection of many hundreds of valuable canvases.

But hardly had the century turned than the first transfers of paintings from Prague to Vienna—the new capital of the Habsburgs—took place.

These periodic transfers, during which many hundreds of works were removed from the Prague gallery, continued off and on up to the end of the nineteenth century.

The state of the once-proud Prague Castle collection was now bad enough in all conscience. The picture was further darkened by the numerous errors and blanks that had crept into the inventories in the course of time. Many of the best things had, of cousre, gone to Vienna. Many others had been sold to the Dresden Court and to Munich. But Professor Neumann’s research into the documents and catalogues of the past two centuries has made it abundantly clear that a large number of valuable canvases had in fact remained in Prague, unknown to the authorities.

Scholars may find this faulty cataloguing in Prague lamentable. But it is clear that, had the records been kept more carefully, many of these works would have shared the fate of the bulk of the collection, either under the Habsburgs or a few years later when the nazis occupied Czechoslovakia. Nothing of note was stolen from the Prague Castle collection after about 1860 for the simple reason that no one, either in Prague or elsewhere, thought there was anything left that was worth stealing.

When a detailed survey of the castle’s contents was ordered a few years ago, it was undertaken—at least so far as the paintings were concerned— more with the idea of listing what little was left than with the hope of any important discoveries. Yet discoveries soon began to be made. Professor Neumann and his team of archivists, restorers, and research workers traced the history of these neglected works back through centuries of conflicting catalogue entries. They subjected the canvases themselves to X-ray and ultra-violet photography, they removed overpainting and restored them, analysed paint samples and pondered over compositional patterns.

The result is now bringing the citizens of Prague flocking to the castle to file proudly past a number of fine paintings by great masters, most of which have never been seen in public before. It is a remarkable demonstration that, although the number of Rembrandts languishing forgotten and unrecognized in family lofts is now probably very limited, the same may not necessarily be true of official storage depots. The Prague experience leads one to hope that there may still be treasure-houses of the arts lying neglected and ignored, awaiting the restorer and archivist.

Nice, March 5.—W. Somerset Maugham, 91-year-old British author who is suffering from congestion of the lungs, was taken to the Anglo-American Hospital in Nice today.

Mr. Maugham’s secretary, Alan Searle, travelled with him in the ambulance from his villa at nearby St.-Jean-Cap Ferrat, hospital officials said.

Mr. Searle said earlier today that the author’s condition was “fairly bad, I’m afraid.”

Mr. Maugham’s doctors had said yesterday that they would not move him from his villa to the hospital because of his age and state of helath. This decision was changed this morning, Mr. Searle said.

Quiet Night

Mr. Maugham had spent a quiet night and his condition remained unchanged today, one member of his household said.

Two nurses called in yesterday were at his bedside at the Villa Mauresque throughout the night.

Mr. Michael Stewart, the Foreign Secretary, who arrived in New York today, is due here later to report on his recent talks with Mr. Gromyko, Soviet Foreign Minister, and to coordinate Anglo-American policies in a number of potential crisis areas. Perhaps most important of all, he comes to establish his own identity in a city where he is virtually unknown.

Amid all the Voskhods, Gemini and Vietnamese air raids, not to mention the replay of the Civil War in Alabama, the public is unlikely to be very attentive, but the State Department is in a more contemplative mood and will listen well.

It is less likely to be responsive to any discreet probings by Mr. Stewart about the future course of American policy in South Vietnam. President Johnson, whom Mr. Stewart is also expected to see, is the only source for such pronouncements and the evidence is that he prefers to talk about present policy. This, he repeated at a news conference at his Texas ranch yesterday, is a policy of taking whatever military action is considered necessary to repel aggression from the north.

The body of Sir Winston Churchill was buried yesterday afternoon in the churchyard at Bladon, Oxfordshire.

After the State funeral, with all the public ritual of Britain paraded to attend his body in and out of the City of London, with the Queen at the funeral service, he was buried in a quiet and country ceremony.

Village boys carried the cross and candles that met the coffin at the lych-gate and the vicar read the burial service, which was attended by the family and close friends.

The church, a bare, Gothicised hall, casts its shadow over the plot where Churchill’s father and mother lie. His grave was dug in the last empty space at the head of theirs, alongside the path. The headstones here are plain and unassertive. There is no room for magnificence.

The graveyard stands on a small hill, at the edge of a village street. Churchill chose it for himself and it lies within sight of his birthplace.

After nearly a third of a million people had queued in the cold beside the Thames, and walked in silence past the catafalque in Westminster Hall, the body was taken to St Paul’s Cathedral. At 9.35 a.m. eight Grenadier Guardsmen emerged, struggling a little under the weight of the great coffin made out of oak grown on the Blenheim estate. Big Ben struck 9.45 as the procession started off, and for the rest of the day stayed silent.

This week’s business in the Commons opens with debates on consecutive days on the two subjects which, most observers found, bulked largest in the minds of urban voters during last autumn’s general election, housing and immigration. Yet paradoxically, respected voices are raised in the demand that these highly political issues be “taken out of politics”. If this means that a truce should be called to party disagreement over housing and immigration, and that those responsible for policy or concerned with the formation of opinion should concentrate instead on certain principles and their applications on which all well-informed, well-disposed people are supposed to be able to agree, then the demand must be thought to betray some misunderstanding about the nature of democratic politics and of the subjects under discussion.

Free politics arise out of opposition of interests and the clash of views. They work towards the resolution of these differences, not by assuming that an identity of interest can always be achieved nor by seeking to remove all basis of disagreement, but by reconciliation and compromise according to customary or acceptable procedures. If that is so, it is both unrealistic and unprofitable to ask that as soon as an area of policy becomes explosive or requires drastic action it should be promoted to a political Olympus where dwell the beneficent deities, All the Talents, National Coalition, True Patriots, and such demigods as Men of the Centre, and Radicals of All Parties.

In a weaker sense, however, the demand that housing and immigration be “taken out of politics”, though awkwardly expressed, is a valid protest against present dangers. The tensions, prejudices, and hostility inseparable from the settlement of foreign immigrants in any numbers, especially those remote in physical characteristics and social customs from an insular European nation, are open to exploitation in the interest of political power, local or national. To ask for an abatement of politics in this connexion is not to ask that argument should cease or party disagreements be submerged; but that policies be advocated and criticized with honest motives, with proper moderation, and with a responsible sense of the dreadful consequences that could flow from any serious mishandling or aggravation.

CONTINENTAL BOURSES STRONG RECOVERY ON MILAN

European bourses were a mixed bag last week, ranging from very firm to very much easier.

Milan took pride of place, with many issues scoring new highs for the year. The uptrend started as a technical reaction which met some profit-taking. But even a modest revival of investment demand late in the holiday-shortened week resulted in prices finishing some 30 per cent over the low points recorded so far in 1965.

Conversely, Zurich was hit by professional profit-taking combined with a good deal of hesitancy by investors who were anticipating higher loans and who were worried about the increasing effects of the anti-inflation measures. Here, prices fell to their worst levels for some six months.

Another centre to make a poor showing was Frankfurt, where shares eased almost continuously throughout the week, local operators declaring that foreign selling orders were responsible. Both Amsterdam and Paris were somewhat dull and hesitant; internationals quoted on the former

WEST EUROPE’S GROWTH RATE SLACKENING, U.N. REPORT SAYS

Geneva, March 26. — Western Europe continued its economic expansion during 1964 but there are signs that growth rates may slacken this year, according to a United Nations report released today.

The Economic Commission for Europe said that the future depends on the problems now facing Britain, France and Italy.

The French and Italian governments were forced to clamp down on the growth of demand and output last year because of inflation in 1963 and there has not been any sign of revival, the report said.

Economic difficulties in the United Kingdom culminated in a record balance-of-payments deficiency and the report forecast that current trends and policies will not improve the situation “in\the foreseeable future.”

It added that Britain must boost its exports to correct the situation. “Те strengthen the export bias permanently means to change habits and attitudes as well as price and profit relationships, and this will not be done quickly,” it warned.

“But only if this can be done will the United Kingdom move into a phase of sustained growth.”

Well, perhaps they are right, since at bottom the formula for happiness consists of proverbs heard in childhood; yet in them is hidden all true wisdom. Let me give you three of them; they are old as civilisation but in them you will find the freshness of early Spring — as soon as you will allow them to imbue and become part of your very being.

Love your neighbour sincerely ; make an effort for this love to go deep down within you and not remain superficial; and then you will have discovered the dayspring of joy from which to drink happiness.

Be of good humour and smile; again effort is needed if the good intention is to be carried right through to real being.

Whether as part of your employment or not, seek out some work that you like doing — no matter how humble — and exert yourself to lavish on it all your idealism and creativity; and in this way you will map out your path through life. Even those who are disinherited in their lives can choose as their creative aim, for example, the endowing of some village with a wooden bench for public use. The day this aim is reached, joy at the accomplishment of a mission will be felt; for the bench will bear witness that not in vain did they live.

And that is all; just sincere neighbourly love, some good humour and a useful task you like doing; but on the day when these three rules become part of your inner nature you will see the good side of life and all will be transfigured in your eyes. No more will you know vexation and boredom — no more feel all that they engender in bitterness of spirit.

You will feel the happiness that comes from just being alive and thinking. Even the simple ability to understand the meanings of words can become a voyage of discovery; each word reveals to us a never-ending panorama of meaning and this in itself is one good reason for our feeling proud and happy.

If I were asked to give school children a theme for their composition exercise I might sometimes choose just one word — the first that entered my mind — since each word has the power to inspire us to thought.

But first a word in your ear : reflect on the disasters that could conceivably follow from some thoughless deed by any one of us, and then you will become more indulgent towards the failings that you notice in others.

Dostoyevski has said : “The executioner lurks within every one of our contemporaries” ; and these “contemporaries” belong to all time.

And now that I have reached 70 and passed by a wide margin the normal life-expectancy at birth — which for me was no more than some 40 years — I give thanks to Providence and to all who have loved me and shown kindness.

“Habui partem meam”, I have had my share of life’s gifts; and now I greet each new day as an extra gift. For all of you I have only one wish to utter : that you may attain to a perfect peace of mind and that when you reach my age you may be just as happy as I am now.
