From a morphological point of view our beautiful and useful contemporary, – I might almost call him colleague, – the Horse (Equus caballus), is the last term of the evolutional Series to which he belongs, just as Homo Sapiens is the last member of the Series of which he is a member… What we are usually pleased to call religion nowadays, is for the most part, Hellenised Judaism; and, not unfrequently, the Hellenic element carries with it a mighty remnant of old world paganism and a great infusion of the worst and weakest produits of Greek Scientific Speculation (Nineteenth Century. December 1885).
…As, century after century, the ages roll on, polytheism comes back under the disguise of Mariolatry and the adoration of Saints; image worship becomes as rampant as in old Egypt; adoration of relics takes the place of the old fetish worship… and even the lustral fluid of paganism is replaud by holy water at the porches of the temples… The greatest men of the middle ages are unable to escape the infection… It is my conviction that, with the spread of culture… and its necessary concomitant, a constant elevation of the Standard of veracity, the eud of the evolution of theology will be like its beginning, – it will cease to have any relation to ethics… It may be that the majority of mankind may find the practice of morality made easier by the use of theological symbols… But when such symbols are dealt with as real existences, I think the highest duty which is laid upon men of Science is to show that these dogmatic idols have no greater value than the fabrications of men’s hands, the Stacks and the Stones, which they have replaced (Nineteenth Century. Il y a longtemps qu’on a dit que, s’il résultait quelque obligation morale de la proposition géométrique, que les trois angles d’un triangle sont égaux à deux angles droits, cette proposition serait combattue et sa certitude mise en problème (Démonstration philosophique, préface).
