The monograph is dedicated to studies of various sides of life in Bessarabia in the late 18th – early 20th centuries. Attention is focused on the eventful moments in he life of the polyethnic Bessarabian society. The reader may make sure about considerable social distance between national Mildavian intellectuals who often did not differentiate the over-Prut and Bessarabian Moldavians, and poorly literate, mostly rural Moldavian population more influenced by the Russian legislation and the Lord’s good word. The book analyzes the process of forming of the qualitatively new structure of the Bessarabian population during the 19th century, which lets us speak about appearance of such polyethnic phenomenon as Bessarabianism close to the end of the said century. The 19th – the early 20th century is the epoch of dynamics of nationalism in Bessarabia, development and consolidation of the Moldavian national self-conscience in the Russian cultural sphere. The monograph is offered to the attention of statespersons, journalists, social scientists, graduate and undergraduate students, and everyone interested in the hard destiny of Bessarabia and its inhabitants in the late 18th – early 20th centuries. The echo of that era, as well as subsequent events of the 20th century, are still affecting the modem ethno-social processes in the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and Eastern Europe as a whole.
