Thus, reader, myself am the matter of my book: there’s no reason thou shouldst employ thy leisure about so frivolous and vain a subject. Therefore farewell.
This book is seen as a present for the one who loves philosophy in its willfulness, who is fond of reading philosophical texts. Its title defines it as a collection of philosophical essays though there are no formal criteria of an essay so that it is quite enough if the author or a reader considers some writing to be an essay. By doing this the philosopher confirms their right to the self-willed thinking, and the reader gets the right to the self-willed reading.
The book includes the works having been published, the works written especially for it and the works which have never been published in Russian before; the essays about essay-writing, an anthology of philosophical essays not claiming to any completeness and the works of contemporary thinkers written or chosen for it by their authors.
