DT copy: Panther Science Fiction edition, 7th printing 1977

Additional reference: UC scan of US-English edition.

The Panther edition is an “anglicized” version of the original American book. The UK-English spelling as in the book has been preserved, but some spelling errors — where they were suspected to be typing errors — have been corrected, after double-checking against at least two of:

• different spellings of the same word in the scanned text

• spelling in the US edition scan

• the Cambridge International Dictionary of English and/or the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.

Some examples of “fixed” spelling include:

‘sublety’ — ‘subtlety’

‘pyschologist’ — ‘psychologist’

‘goverment’ — ‘government’

‘super-numeraries’ — ‘supernumeraries’

Finally, the most blatant (and hence most obvious) of a series of rather unexpected errors made in the “translation” from American to British English have been corrected (after double-checking against the US scan) — can you imagine an editor or transcriber changing “waited for the light of understanding to come to at least one pair of eyes” into “waited for the light of misunderstanding to come to at least one pair of eyes” — and getting paid for the job???
