Интернет вещей (англ. Internet of Things, IoT) – концепция вычислительной сети физических предметов («вещей»), оснащенных встроенными технологиями для взаимодействия друг с другом или с внешней средой, рассматривающая организацию таких сетей как явление, способное перестроить экономические и общественные процессы, исключающее из части действий и операций необходимость участия человека.

Следует отметить, что мы не стремимся классифицировать инновации (например, на «поддерживающие» и «подрывные», как предлагает Клейтон Кристенсен). Мы считаем, что революционные технологии оказывают влияние на конкурентоспособность. Все, что вызывает значительные и быстрые перемены в конкурентной среде, следовательно, является «революционным». Все очень просто: если цифровые технологии и бизнес-модели используются для оказания подобного воздействия, происходит цифровая революция. В этом случае мы стремимся понять эти бизнес-модели и возможности предприятий, производящих цифровую революцию, и сделать выводы, применимые к игрокам отраслевого рынка.

Как и следовало ожидать, теперь и WhatsApp ощущает на себе действие революции, поскольку на рынок вышли новые компании с высокими идеалами и толстыми кошельками. Платформа iMessage компании Apple и WeChat, принадлежащая китайскому интернет-гиганту Tencent, уже завоевали большие доли мирового рынка текстовых сообщений и голосовой связи.
