‘Modes are sets of eight pitches arranged around whole and half steps. A whole step is the distance between a C and D or a G and A; meanwhile a half step is the distance between E and F or A and B-flat. Modes are similar to modern musical scales in that they have a defined set of whole and half steps that are used in a given piece of music and privilege certain pitches (e.g. D mode privileges D and A). The arrangement of notes make modes like modern keys in that they give a mode a particular sound or timbre (not unlike associating major keys with happiness and minor keys with sadness).’ Michelle Urberg PhD, personal communication.
