В 11-м издании «Международной классификации болезней и проблем, связанных со здоровьем» (МКБ-11) Всемирная организация здравоохранения определяет выгорание как синдром, возникающий в результате хронического стресса на рабочем месте, с которым не удалось справиться. Он характеризуется тремя составляющими: 1) чувством истощения энергии или изнеможения; 2) возрастанием эмоциональной отстраненности от работы, негативным или циничным отношением к работе и 3) чувством неэффективности и недостатка достижений. Также ВОЗ заявляет, что эмоциональное выгорание может случиться исключительно на работе. Определение ВОЗ однозначно важно, но оно не берет в расчет области жизни человека, где работа пересекается с личной жизнью, не рассматривает практики наподобие неоплачиваемого декретного отпуска и не затрагивает темы отсутствия цели в жизни и несоответствия работы устремлениям человека, которые отчетливо проявляются у некоторых людей при выгорании. – Здесь и далее, кроме особо оговоренных случаев, прим. пер.
