Conversion Table

Translator’s note: The Russian practice is to measure crude oil and refined petroleum products by weight, e.g., in metric tons. This makes conversion to the American measurement in barrels difficult because the specific gravity of the material can vary.

1 tonne of crude = 264.174/G U.S. gal. = 6.28983/G bbl.,

where G is the specific gravity. A typical result based on a specific gravity in the range of 0.75 to 0.80 would then be:

1 tonne of crude ≈ 330.2 to 352.3 U.S. gal. = 7.86 to 8.38 bbl.

The higher figures (more volume per tonne) correspond to lighter crude (sp.gr. 0.75).

For convenience, at the author’s request, we have converted all Russian weight measures of oil to barrels as follows: 1 metric ton = 1000 kg = 7.33 US bbl. This assumes a specific gravity of 0.82.
