And technically, Apocalypse Now is an adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness. But screenwriter John Milius was appalled when the film was put into the Best Screenplay Adaptation category in the 1980 Academy Awards, angrily arguing that the screenplay was an original work.
