*During his New York New Wave years, De Palma would film entirely in split-screen, a strange happening of its time, the Living Theatre’s production of Euripides’ The Bacchae, titled Dionysus in ’69, which no doubt influenced one his greatest achievements, the Be Black Baby sequence in Hi, Mom!. And technically, Apocalypse Now is an adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness. But screenwriter John Milius was appalled when the film was put into the Best Screenplay Adaptation category in the 1980 Academy Awards, angrily arguing that the screenplay was an original work.
