Здесь важно отметить и родственные связи Грэхемов с Дугласами. Арчибальд Дуглас был женат на Эуфемии Грэхем, сестре Майлза, графа Ментейта и сэра Роберта Грэхема. Сам граф Ментейт после потери родового графства был отправлен в числе заложников за короля в Англию (1427), а точнее — изгнан за поддержку Олбани. Впрочем, все это преподносилось как вполне законная процедура — под видом отправки в Англию взамен умершего шотландского заложника (по соглашению 1424 г.).

Известно, что Дуглас, по просьбе родственников графа Майлза, был намерен вступить в закулисные переговоры с англичанами по поводу его освобождения об условиях обмена или выкупа. Вероятно, информация о планах Дугласа достигла короля и вызвала подозрения, в результате чего последовал приказ короля об аресте графа Дугласа.
