This book came to me while I was working on the 2012 presidential campaign in Chapel Hill, NC. Without that experience I never could have written this book, and I’m thankful every day that I took the five months out of my life to dedicate to working for a cause I believed in. So, I think first and foremost, I have to thank the campaign and everyone I worked with on it—Meera, Gregg, Alex, Maddie, Kane, Greg, Rob, and Mary. Additionally the dedicated students at UNC that inspired me each and every day—Hannah, Daniel, Olivia, Anna, Ralph, Avani, and Kathleen. Not to mention the supporter housing that kept me alive during that time—Kiran, Rosie, and Joann.
Several people read early drafts of this book and gave me feedback that proved invaluable. Thank you for your guidance and encouragement—Jessica, Bridget, Christina, Trish, Becky, Lori, and Jenny. Also, Claribel for understanding the life of a politician and reminding me that anything goes.
My agent, Jane, took my experiences on the campaign, offered her advice on this project, and then saw it through to fruition with Amazon Publishing, which I’m happy to now call my home. Thank you to my editor, Carly, for believing in my work and taking a chance on the Record series. Also, my descriptive editor, Tiffany, who pushed my writing and characters to their fullest extent.
And as always, I never would have gotten through this book without my boyfriend, Joel, and my two puppies, Riker and Lucy. Thank you for sound-boarding the book, providing creative plot twists, listening to me rant, offering advice on political matters, and believing in the book from day one.
