Even though we moderns
can never crawl inside the skin of the ancient…
we must as historians make the attempt.
I have tried to develop these themes
as constructively as the data allow,
realizing that I have often ventured
where more qualified Egyptologists
have feared to tread.
But understanding rather than perfection
is the goal of the scholarship,
and we must continue to reformulate and assess problems
with the data in hand.
The results must speak for themselves…
