Teen Dies in Freak Camping Accident
Authorities say a large tree branch fell on a tent last night, killing a fifteen-year-old girl inside. Jessie Kanagie of Philadelphia had been camping with her family for the weekend. Emergency crews were called to Cherrydale Campground around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The fire department cut the tree branch and removed it but found Kanagie inside the tent already deceased.
“It was just a freak accident,” the fire chief said. “It’s tragic.”
There have not been any storms in the area recently, but authorities believe that a combination of erosion and wind may have caused the branch to snap off the tree and land on the girl’s tent. Her brother and father were asleep in nearby tents but say they didn’t hear anything and didn’t know there had been an accident until they woke up and found Kanagie’s tent crushed beneath the tree branch. “We’re devastated,” said her father. “We were here on a retreat. This was supposed to be a good thing.” The teen had arson charges pending against her in juvenile court and was out on bail.
