THE SHOOTING PARTY

Translated by A. E. Chamot 1925

This is the only novel to be written by Chekhov, which was published in serial format in a St. Petersburg newspaper when he was 24 years old. The story is told from the viewpoint of a dissolute magistrate and seducer of lonely local women, whose romantic misadventures result in the death of one of his victims at a shooting party. It is a steamy story of murder and betrayal, set against the rolling backdrop of provincial Russia.
