Зимний день в Лондоне. Я сижу в библиотеке. Это нормально. Я с трудом сдерживаю слезы – вот это ненормально.

Дело было в Лондоне, поэтому на меня начали оглядываться. Какой-то мужчина неодобрительно поцокал языком. Какая-то женщина прошептала что-то вроде: «Бывают же люди…» В Британии мало какой грех сравнится с проявлением чувств в библиотеке. Если бы я предстал перед ними в чем мать родила, их негодование было бы, наверное, меньше.

Долгие годы я выстраивал сюжет об Александре Великом, одном исследователе и одном затерянном городе. Я облазил архивы от Нью-Дели до Пенсильвании. Как-то раз я открыл в Лондоне пыльную коробку, мало чем отличавшуюся от других, – и увидел наконец Чарльза Массона во всей красе: в закоулках Карачи, вдрызг пьяного, клявшего на чем свет стоит весь мир и пишущего, пишущего, пишущего…

Немалая часть мира Массона живет и дышит по сей день, не нуждаясь в подстраничных комментариях. Пыль пустыни заносит те же самые дома, верблюды жуют и плюются на тех же уличных углах, воины в долинах Афганистана плетут все те же басни об Александре Македонском. Следы Массона, гнавшегося за Александром, протянулись по всему миру. Перечисленные здесь источники – лишь некоторые из этих сохранившихся следов.

Вопреки стараниям почти всех участников этой истории, она вполне правдива.

В XIX веке люди мало в чем соглашались друг с другом, в написании афганских названий и имен тоже не было единодушия. Кабул разные авторы могли называть и Kabul, и Cabool, и Cabul, и Kabal (и даже это еще не все). С именами дело ничуть не лучше: Шуджа-Шаха как только не называли, вариантов было даже больше, чем попыток отнять у него трон. Поэтому, из заботы о большей ясности, имена и названия даются в этой книге единообразно.

Значительное большинство сохранившихся археологических находок Массона находится сейчас в БРИТАНСКОМ МУЗЕЕ. Большая часть сохранившихся бумаг Массона находится в БРИТАНСКОЙ БИБЛИОТЕКЕ. Это весьма обширная коллекция, а если учесть, как часто Массон терял все, чем обладал, то ее нынешнюю обширность можно считать чудом. В ней зарисовки, дневники, шуточные заметки об открытиях и письма, полные растерянности и гнева. «Я отдаю себе отчет, – пишет сам Массон, – что многое, возможно даже большую часть, способен расшифровать только я»[1239]. Библиотека предприняла героическую попытку упорядочить весь этот хаос, но все равно остается чехарда датировок и привязки к местности – порой кажется, что она намеренная. Большая часть библиотечных фондов значится в каталоге как MSS Eur. A.31, B.98–101, C.90, D.441–2, E.161–70 и F.61–5, для поиска существует удобный раздел каталога «Catalogue of European MSS, volume II» в читальном зале африканистики и востоковедения библиотеки. Библиотека располагает также обширным фондом документов Ост-Индской компании: ссылки на них рассыпаны по всему тексту, но особую ценность представляет серия Bengal Secret Consultations (Секретные совещания, Бенгалия) – полный перечень самых двусмысленных актов Ост-Индской компании.

Коллекции НАЦИОНАЛЬНЫХ АРХИВОВ ИНДИИ в Нью-Дели и АРХИВОВ ПЕНДЖАБА в Лахоре располагают важными элементами головоломки, особенно в отношении всего связанного с вторжением Ост-Индской компании в Афганистан. Переписка Массона с Генри Поттинджером хранится как в Британской библиотеке, так и в Национальном архиве в Лондоне (там – среди документов Форин Офис, каталожный номер FO 705/32). «Литературные останки» Иосии Харлана – такие же причудливые, как и он сам – хранятся в замечательном Историческом обществе округа Честер (Уэстчестер, Пенсильвания). Дневник Александра Бёрнса хранится в собраниях Вустерского колледжа в Оксфорде. Самые безнадежные моменты в жизни Массона можно проследить по документам Генри Ролинсона в Королевском географическом обществе. В архиве Джона Мюррея в Национальной библиотеке Шотландии можно изучать историю злоключений Массона в издательском мире.
